ZAP-X: The latest innovation in the treatment of intracranial tumours

ZAP-X gyroscopic radiosurgery: treatment outcomes and risk mitigation

Radiosurgery, commonly referred to as SRS (stereotactic radiosurgery), is recognised as an alternative to surgery for the effective treatment of many brain tumours, both malignant (brain metastases, glial tumours) and benign (shwannomas, meningiomas), as well as other vascular and functional brain diseases.

Unlike surgery, radiosurgery is non-invasive with no incisions or anaesthesia, and is painless.SRS is usually administered in one to five fractions performed on an outpatient basis and patients often return to normal activities the same day as the procedure.

Zap-X gyroscopic radiosurgery is the first new technology for radiosurgery developed in nearly half a century. ZAP-X offers new standards of treatment through surgical robotics, combining radiosurgical safety and efficiency with patient comfort and convenience.

Treatment Efficiency: The ZAP-X is designed to revolutionise modern radiosurgery with a revolutionary gyroscopic design that delivers hundreds of single-angle radiation beams with unparalleled precision. The goal: to deliver the prescribed radiation dose to the target while avoiding damage to healthy tissue.

Risk mitigation because by using a multitude of unique angles to deliver the prescribed radiation dose, ZAP-X avoids radiation exposure to critical structures such as the brain stem, optic chiasm, optic nerves, eyes, etc.

ZAP-X’s pioneering approach also reduces clinically significant exposure of healthy brain tissue, thereby mitigating the risk of affecting the patient’s cognitive function.

ZAP-X: safety, comfort and simplified administration to the patient

Patient comfort: To maintain extreme accuracy throughout the treatment, ZAP-X uses a fully integrated high-definition imaging system that continuously detects and corrects potential target movements. This new technique avoids the use of invasive frames that can be awkward and aggressive for the patient during irradiation.

Patient confidence:
As the first and only self-shielding radiation technology, ZAP-X now allows the clinical team and, in some cases, family members to be in close proximity to the patient during treatment, allowing the patient to be confident and in the best possible condition.

Simplified administration:

  • Simple ambulatory procedure
  • No invasive restraint frame
  • No pain or discomfort during the radiation session
  • Self-shielding design eliminates prolonged isolation of the patient in a treatment room
  • Return to normal life on the same day as the session with rapid recovery

Patient safety:

  • This robotic system rigorously controls radiation and avoids exposure of critical structures such as the brain stem, optic chiasm, optic nerves....
  • An innovative machine that reduces the exposure of healthy brain tissue, thus avoiding the possibility of affecting the patient’s cognitive function.
